Abella
Abella (also known as Abella of Salerno, Abella Castellomata) was a physician of the mid-twelfth century. Abella was a student at the Salerno School of Medicine and was an teacher. Abella was born in 1380. The exact dates and times she died isn't yet established. 2 Abella lectured on standard medical techniques, bile as well as women's health and the natural world at the medical institute in Salerno. (1) Abella and Rebecca de Guarna, specialized in the field of embryology. Abella published two documents: De atrabile (On Black Bile) and De natura seminis humani (on the nature of the Seminal Fluid) which neither have survived to this day. Salvatore De Renzi, a nineteenth century historian of Salerno School of Medicine, lists Abella as one of four women in addition to Rebecca de Guarna, Mercuriade and Constance Calenda. They were all known for being able to teach medicine and write treatises. This attribute placed Abella into a group that was known as the Mulieres Salernitanae or women from Salerno
