Rauw Alejandro

In 2017, Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee released Despacito and it was the top-streamed track in just the space of six months. The combination of reggaeton and pop music has not only brought interest back to the genre, but it also brought attention to Latin music generally. Billboard's Top 100 had four songs mainly in Spanish as of 2016, in contrast to two in 2015. During the height of Despacito's popularity in 2017 however 19 mostly Spanish songs made it into the Top 100 In 2020, there were 41 of them. Justin Bieber remixed Despacito 2017 as a bilingual rendition. Then, various artists collaborated with Reggaeton stars like Drake as well as Bad Bunny with MIA (2018), Madonna and Maluma together with Medellin 2019. A few performers of reggaeton have criticized the shift to popular music by 2020. But a new group, Rauw Alejandro, wanted to continue the development and growth of reggaeton. The incorporation of elements from electronic dance music and different styles was an accepted method.
